The Southern California Renal Disease Council, Network 18, is an organization contracted by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). It serves as an oversight agency to all Medicare certified end-stage renal disease (ESRD) dialysis and transplant providers within a specified geographical region (Southern California).
Part of the networks function is to provide supportive services and quality improvement measures to transplant and dialysis facilities within that region. Across the nation there are a total of 18 organizations performing the same task.
As part of providing support to ESRD Medicare certified providers and their patients, the networks provide case consultation on difficult situations that often arise when providing care to ESRD patients.
A frequently identified problematic behavior is that of non-adherence to treatment. This non-adherence can range anywhere from refusal to take medications, poor diet and fluid restrictions, refusal to draw labs, or poor treatment attendance.
