ICH-CAHPS Survey and QIP As mentioned in the recent CMS ESRD Open Door Forum, the patient survey entitled “In Center Hemodialysis-Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems” (ICH CAHPS) will soon be impacting payment for dialysis services. In fact, CMS has mandated that clinics must complete this survey in 2012 in order to qualify for the full 2014 QIP.

Dialysis From the Patient’s Perspective

This patient satisfaction survey addresses the dialysis experience from the patient’s point

of view. Much like the pain scale used in clinical care, where a patient is asked to express pain on a scale ranging from 1 to 10, the ICH-CAHPS often asks patients to use a number to express a subjective feeling.

Some questions assess the patient’s perception regarding how care is being delivered, with items ranging from subjective feelings of being respected to objective facts such as what type of access is being used and how long the patient has been on dialysis at the specific dialysis center being reviewed.
