NKF brings awareness to CKD in HIV patients

08/27/2008

A program to raise awareness among clinicians and HIV treatment educators about the growing problem of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in patients with HIV was launched by the National Kidney Foundation, Medical News Today reported.

The goal of the program is to educate clinicians and educators on the risks associated with CKD and the best methods to screen and monitor kidney function.

Seven to 30 percent of HIV patients are estimated to potentially have CKD, yet it remains under-diagnosed and under-treated in HIV patients. To help change this “the National Kidney Foundation has created a new toolkit for clinicians and is developing a companion version for HIV treatment educators to help both groups identify and discuss CKD with patients,” Medical News Today reported.
