Genzyme begins expanding Boston facility

09/18/2007

BOSTON—Genzyme said today that it has broken ground to expand its flagship manufacturing facility at Allston Landing in Boston.

The $150 million project will add space to support manufacturing in addition to adding 90 jobs, according to Genzyme. The project includes 86,000 square feet of new office and manufacturing support space. In addition, Genzyme said it is building a 26,000 square-foot underground cogeneration facility, which will generate steam to run the plant’s process operations as well as produce electricity.

“The expansion of Allston Landing will help sustain the continued growth of Genzyme’s products,” said Henri A. Termeer, chairman and CEO of Genzyme. “It will enable us to continue to fulfill our long-term commitment to deliver these life-saving treatments to patients around the world.”

The Allston facility began production in 1996 and was the company’s first major manufacturing facility. Genzyme said it now has 17 manufacturing facilities worldwide.
