Bernard Charra to receive ISHD Belding Scribner Award

05/15/2008

VICENZA, Italy—On June 3, the International Society for Hemodialysis will present Bernard Charra, MD, with the Belding Scribner ISHD Award.

The award honors Charra’s contributions to the art and science of renal replacement therapies, most notably in nocturnal hemodialysis.

Charra was born April 19, 1942, in Decazville, France. Between 1961 and 1968 he attended medical school in Montpellier. Belding Scribner, MD, from the University of Washington in Seattle, invited Charra to Seattle to be a senior fellow. Scribner was an advocate of nonprofit dialysis centers and helped establish the first community dialysis clinic, called the SeattleArtificialKidneyCenter, which later became Northwest Kidney Centers.

Charra eventually became the head of the Centre de Rein Artificial de Tassin in France, and he is now retired. ISHD will honor Charra with the Scribner award at the joint meeting of the 1st Congress of the International Society for Hemodialysis and the 17th International Vicenza Course on Hemodialysis to be held in Vicenza, Italy, on June 3-6, 2008.
