WIXOM, Mich.--Rockwell Medical Technologies Inc. has received a Canadian patent for its Dri-Sate Dry Acid Concentrate Mix System, according to a company news release.

"This patent is an important step in our business development in Canada," said Roc Chioini, Rockwell's chief executive officer. "The superior packaging and mixing technology of the Dri-Sate system, coupled with Genpharm's aggressive Renal Care distribution arm, should position us to develop a strong presence in Canada. We anticipate regulatory approval sometime within the next two quarters."

The Dri-Sate system is a method to prepare and distribute dialysate solution for dialysis treatment. It is packaged as a condensed powder that is mixed on-site by a dialysis technician.

Rockwell will manufacture its dry dialysate concentrate products for Toronto-based Genpharm Inc.'s Renal Care Products Division, according to a distribution agreement signed by the two companies in January. Once the product receives Canadian regulatory approval, Genpharm will then market and distribute Rockwell's Dri-Sate product and RenalPure Powder Bicarbonate in Canada. Both companies said the annual Canadian market for dialysis concentrate is approximately $24 million.
