VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.—Ronald Poulin, MD, a hematologist and oncologist, was indicted in federal court April 3 on charges of defrauding Medicare and Tricare, the health insurance program for military families, by more than $850,000 over the past three years, reported the Newport News Daily Press.
Poulin, who operates Virginia Hematology Oncology, is accused of administering a potentially dangerous anemia drug, Procrit, without sufficient medical justification and of falsifying records in an attempt to thwart a federal investigation of his practice.
If convicted on all 45 felony counts, he could face a sentence of up to 245 years in prison and more than $11 million in fines.
