NEW YORK—William F. Keane, MD, chief medical officer at SENO Medical Instruments in San Antonio, Texas, was named the 2009 Donald W. Seldin Award winner by the National Kidney Foundation (NKF).
Keane is a nationally-recognized expert on kidney disease and nephrology who has served on the editorial board of Kidney International, authored more than 300 scientific papers and served as past president of the National Kidney Foundation.
The Donald W. Seldin Award recognizes excellence in clinical nephrology in the tradition of Dr. Donald Seldin, one of the foremost teachers and researchers in the field.
"Dr. Keane's work literally re-shaped the direction of the NKF. He was responsible for expanding the focus of the organization from treating kidney failure patients with dialysis to encompass the entire spectrum of chronic kidney disease, with the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI) that has had a major impact on patient care," said Bryan Becker, MD, NKF President.
Keane was previously chief medical officer at Reliant Pharmaceuticals. He has served as vice president of US Medical and Scientific Affairs at Merck, Inc. and served as chairman of the Department of Medicine, Hennepin Medical Center, at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
