WASHINGTON—The U.S. Senate confirmed Dr. Margaret Hamburg as head of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Hamburg will be sworn in as the FDA’s 21st commissioner and only the second woman to hold the post in 100 years of agency history, reported the Associated Press.

Hamburg, a bioterrorism expert, was President Obama’s pick to head the battered FDA. Her top priorities include improving food safety and safety of medical products as well as directing the development of a vaccine for H1N1 virus.
