TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—Florida Gov. Charlie Crist today signed the Alonzo Mourning Access to Care Act that will let patients under age 65 with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) obtain Medigap insurance if they already qualify for Medicare.

Medigap will count as the second of two coverages needed to get on a waiting list for a kidney.

The kidney transplant bill, which will become law Oct. 1, was named after former Miami Heat star and kidney transplant recipient Alonzo Mourning.
