MIAMI—The University of Miami's UHealth, Baptist Health South Florida and Mercy Hospital will help fund one month of dialysis treatments “until a longer-term solution can be found” for approximately 40 dialysis patients who lost support from Jackson Health System.
On Dec. 31, 2009, Jackson Health System stopped paying for outpatient dialysis treatments for 175 poor patients; approximately one-third of those patients are undocumented immigrants who are not eligible for government programs.
Jackson Health System, which is Miami-Dade's government health system intended to be a safety net for the poor and uninsured, expects to save $4.2 million by stopping payments for the outpatient dialysis treatments. Of those, other avenues for care have been found for all but 41, said spokesman Robert Alonso.
