PARIS—French nephrologist Bernard Canaud has been recognized for his lifetime of medical achievement with the Legion d’Honneur, according to The International Society for Hemodialysis.
Canaud is the deputy Secretary of ISHD. He received this award from Bernard Accoyer, President of the Assemblee Nationale, in Paris on Nov. 4, 2009.
The Legion d’Honneur award was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 as a means of recognizing French citizens for extraordinary service and merit.
Known as an expert in the field of chronic kidney disease, Canaud is also the professor and head of nephrology, dialysis and intensive care at Montpellier University School of Medicine, Lapeyronie Hospital, Montpellier, France.
He has dedicated his medical career to caring for people with CKD, and conducted pioneering work to improve dialysis treatments for patients, including ultrapure dialysate, high flux dialysis, and hemodialfiltration.
ISHD president Madhukar Misra, MD, of the University of Missouri, praised Canaud for his contributions to the field and his lifelong commitment to patient care. “Dr. Canaud exemplifies the best in medicine, i.e., great scientific intellect, innovative spirit, and boundless compassion,” Misra said. “He truly deserves this honor. The ISHD is proud to be associated with professionals of the caliber of Dr. Canaud.”
