SAN JOSE, Calif.—The world market for kidney dialysis centers is projected to exceed $68 billion by the 2015, and will primarily be driven by rise in number of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients, aging global population, and increasing prevalence of diabetes, obesity, and hypertension, according to a recent report from Global Industry Analysts Inc.

Dialysis services, comprising of dialysis centers or clinics, account for a major share of the dialysis industry, according to the report. With an increasing incidence of ESRD globally, the number of dialysis patients is expected to grow by about 4 percent to 6 percent in the United States, Japan and Europe annually, thereby driving the market for dialysis centers.

The number of dialysis patients in the United States is expected to grow by around 5 percent annually, driven by a rise in aging population, growing prevalence of hypertension and diabetes, according to the report. The number of U.S. dialysis centers grew by about 4 percent annually. Hemodialysis treatment offered at these dialysis centers accounted for a major share of the market, while the rest is accounted for by peritoneal dialysis.

Kidney dialysis centers’ revenues from rest of the world market, comprising Europe, Japan, Asia, Middle East and Latin America, are projected to exhibit faster growth compared to the U.S. market, according to the report. In Europe, the number of patients undergoing dialysis is increasing steadily at about 6 percent annually. To address the high demand, about 5,200 dialysis centers exist in Europe.

In Japan, about 37,500 new cases of ESRD are diagnosed annually, attributed primarily to aging Japanese population and rise in diabetes cases. Dialysis services are widely available in Japan
