WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J—Merck told analysts May 11 that is ended development of a follow-on biologic that would have competed with Amgen’s Aranesp to treat anemia, according to a report in the May 11 Wall Street Journal.

Merck announced the project in 2008, and originally expected to launch in 2012. However, Merck said it canceled the drug’s development because it faced expensive and lengthy safety testing, according to the Wall Street Journal report.
