BAD HOMBURG, Germany—Fresenius has acquired Gambro’s global peritoneal dialysis (PD) business and other related assets, according to an Aug. 26 news release.

Currently, Gambro’s global PD business is used by more than 4,000 patients in more than 25 countries.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The deal also includes a long-term supply agreement with Gambro’s solutions manufacturing facility in YongIn, Korea. In addition, the agreement will also include a supple agreement with Gambro’s solutions manufacturing facility in Canosa, Italy, but that part of the deal is subject to “relevant council consultations.”

Fresenius will offer on-going employment opportunities for PD-dedicated Gambro employees.

“This transaction allows us to prioritize our investments in the areas where we believe we have the biggest opportunities to create the most value, for our customers and our company. Focusing on our core HD [hemodialysis] business including the home segment, is a strategic priority for us and an integral part of our growth strategy,” said Francisco Canal, president Gambro Chronic Business Unit. “We are committed to invest in innovations that will allow physicians to individualize patient-care for an optimal dialysis therapy delivery.”

The transaction is subject to necessary regulatory and other approvals as well as relevant work council consultations. Both companies expect the acquisition to close before the end of the year.

“We see strong potential both in our Chronic HD business as well as within our acute segment where we today are the market leader. This is an exciting time as we continue to focus and build an even stronger Company for the future,” said Thomas Glanzmann, Gambro president and CEO. “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated employees who have built a strong PD business over the years. With Fresenius Medical Care as the new owner, they will have the opportunity to continue to develop this business.”
