SAN JOSE, Calif.— The global market for kidney dialysis equipment and supplies is projected to reach $12.6 billion by the year 2015, according to a report by Global Industry Analysts (GIA).

The increase will be due to the rising incidence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD), an aging global population, increasing incidence of diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, and a shortage of donors for transplantation, according to GIA.

“Despite the smaller base of global dialysis patient population, the industry’s stable and non-cyclical characteristic implies that the sector remains relatively unaffected by adverse economic conditions that have crippled majority of the industrial sectors,” GIA wrote in a news release. “The number of dialysis patients is expected to witness rapid growth in developing economies such as India and China, while developed countries are expected to witness steady rise in patient population as the numbers are already high in these markets.”

The report titled “Kidney Dialysis Equipment and Supplies: A Global Strategic Business Report” provides a comprehensive review of market trends, competitive scenario, product introductions/innovations, and recent industry activity. The study analyzes market data and analytics in terms of value sales for regions including the United States, Canada, Japan, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle East, and Latin America.

GIA said the worldwide dialysis industry exhibited resistance to the global economic slowdown, managing to register growth owing to the continuous rise in the number of patients suffering from chronic kidney failure and the sustained efforts being made by governments to provide adequate healthcare to this expanding patient population.

Decline in government healthcare expenditure, owing to economic downturn, is expected to result in an increase in the number of private run dialysis centers, according to GIA. Additionally, several countries are also permitting private enterprises and individuals to operate dialysis centers resulting in higher market growth.

The United States, Europe, and Japan collectively account for more than 75 percent share of the sales in the global kidney dialysis equipment and supplies market, according to the GIA report.

Global market for kidney dialysis equipment and supplies is demonstrating impressive growth led by increased demand from emerging markets of Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Asia-Pacific, according to GIA. The market is particularly strong in developing countries such as India, China and Brazil.. Asia-Pacific, the fastest growing regional market for kidney dialysis equipment and supplies, is expected to grow at a compounded annual rate of more than 7 percent over the analysis period.

“The higher infection risk linked to incorrect peritoneal dialysis leads to rise in demand for hemodialysis. To address this increase in demand, physicians and nephrologists are setting up private dialysis centers for providing treatment facilities to patients, thereby resulting in the emergence of profitable outpatient dialysis centers. Rising incidence of ESRD and the self-administrable and easy-to-use characteristic of peritoneal dialysis are expected to foster growth in the peritoneal dialysis equipment and supplies market,” GIA said in a news release.
