DEERFIELD, Ill.—Newsweek magazine ranked Baxter International first in the healthcare category and 15th overall in the magazine’s second annual “Green Rankings.”

The Green Rankings is a list of the 500 largest publicly traded U.S. companies measured by revenue, market capitalization and number of employees. Baxter ranked #15 in the overall list.

The rankings assess each company’s environmental footprint, policies and strategies to manage that footprint, and reputation among environmental experts. The quality of each company’s environmental reporting, policies, programs, and initiatives are measured, including 700 metrics such as emissions of key greenhouse gases, water use and solid-waste disposal.

Among other criteria, Baxter’s ranking resulted from strong management of environmental issues and commitment to environmental stewardship. For example, as company revenue grew more than 27 percent from 2005 to 2009, Baxter increased its energy use by just 1 percent, decreased associated greenhouse gas emissions by 5 percent and reduced water usage by 9 percent, all on an absolute basis from operations.
