SAN JOSE, Calif.— Satellite Healthcare is celebrating the 10th year of the Norman S. Coplon Extramural Grant Program, which targets researchers conducting innovative and important kidney disease research in the United States.
Each year Satellite Healthcare awards grants, which total up to $150,000 for each recipient over three years, to promising early-career researchers dedicated to undertaking critical research in the area of kidney disease and its treatment. Named after Norman S. Coplon, the Stanford nephrologist who founded Satellite Healthcare in 1973, the Norman S. Coplon Extramural Grant Program supports both bench (i.e., “basic science”) as well as clinical research.
On Saturday, April 2, Satellite Healthcare will host a special celebration in San Francisco at the JW Marriott during its annual research symposium to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the program.
“We are very excited about this year’s symposium, which marks the 10th anniversary of the program,” said Dr. Brigitte Schiller, Chief Medical Officer of Satellite Healthcare. “More than ever the funding mechanism through Satellite’s Extramural Grant Program provides much needed support to accelerate research in the field of chronic kidney disease. This research is critical to improving outcomes in our patients at a time in which our country’s healthcare system is undergoing profound changes.”
Schiller will kick off the celebration with a compelling overview of the history and achievements of the Extramural Grant Program, followed by interactive discussions with past and current award recipients including:
- Darius L. Mason, Pharm.D., BCPS, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (2010 recipient), speaking about “Sustainability of serum [25OHD] levels, inflammatory reduction, and endothelial dysfunction after repletion with ergocalciferol in CKD Stage 5D.”
- Sushrut S. Waikar, MD, MPH, Brigham and Women’s Hospital (2009 recipient), speaking about “Serum Sodium Concentration and Outcomes in Hemodialysis Patients.”
- Susanne B. Nicholas, MD, Ph.D., David Geffen School of Medicine UCLA (2008 recipient), speaking about "Investigating Prevention and Mechanisms of Type 1 Diabetic Nephropathy."
- Glenn Chertow, MD, MPH, professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine, will then present data from the “The FHN Trial: Implications for the Future of End Stage Renal Disease Care in the US?”
