INDIANAPOLIS —A kidney transplant recipient and her daughter have released a new book called "Kidney Steps: a 5-Step Survival Guide for Those with Diabetes, Hypertension or Kidney Issues" that offers research, statistics and tips designed to aid anyone facing health problems due to kidney disease or related illnesses.

Victoria L. Hulett, a lawyer, inherited a kidney disease that destroyed all kidney function in her body. Her daughter Jennifer L. Waybright, co-author and nurse, donated a kidney to save Hulett's life.

The book was edited by Dr. Tim E. Taber, Chief of Nephrology at Indiana University Hospital.

Intended to guide readers through what can be a bewildering and nerve-wracking process, the authors include recent research, statistics and patient interviews designed to help readers understand kidney issues and respond appropriately. Broken down into five major steps, the book offers insight on one's relative odds of developing kidney disease, explains CKD in layman's terms, instructs readers on self-management of health conditions, provides nutrition and diet tips and encourages physical activity.

"The book is designed to be what I needed when I was progressing through the stages of CKD—a reliable source that included everything in one place," Hulett said. "If people were aware of the risks and consequences of these issues, the majority of cases of CKD might be avoided or their progression slowed."

"Kidney Steps: a 5-Step Survival Guide for Those with Diabetes, Hypertension or Kidney Issues" is available for sale online at Amazon.com and other channels.
