LAWRENCE, Mass.—The American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP) honored Barry Straube, MD, with the Peter Lundin, MD, Award at the organization's 38th Annual Convention in August.
The AAKP presents the award yearly to an outstanding renal physician who makes contributions to the care, welfare and well-being of patients over a lifetime of devoted service. The award is named for a former President of AAKP, Peter Lundin, who was both a nephrologist and an end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patient.
Straube is the immediate past Chief Medical Officer for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), as well as the immediate past director of the CMS Office of Clinical Standards & Quality (OCSQ). He is also a member of NxStage Medical’s board of directors.

Straube is a board-certified nephrologist and led CMS efforts in kidney quality metrics development and use, kidney disease quality improvement initiatives, development of the ESRD bundled payment and Quality Incentive Programs, creation of the CROWNWeb ESRD data collection initiative, and many other initiatives focused on improving the quality and value of care delivered to patients with kidney disease.
