ALBANY, N.Y.—The Northeast Kidney Foundation will expand its vehicle donation program aimed at channeling proceeds back to the local community.
The newest markets to benefit from Kidney Wheels include Buffalo, Rochester and Westchester, New York, along with Western Massachusetts and Vermont. The Northeast Kidney Foundation recently localized its car donation program so that proceeds would go to local families in need along with the many other programs the Northeast Kidney Foundation supports in the fight against kidney disease.
Kidney Wheels is a way to support individuals in the Northeast that are living with or at risk of kidney disease, and helping the tens of thousands of individuals waiting for a lifesaving transplant simply by donating a car, truck, RV, motorcycle or boat. 100 percent of the proceeds from Kidney Wheels are channeled back into the local community to help those most in need.
One component to the Kidney Wheels program is that it supports patient assistance programs to provide emergency funding and transportation subsidies to patients facing financial crises.
Proceeds are also utilized for community based programs of prevention, education and support, including: patient education, free kidney screenings, school based programs, corporate wellness programs, local research and programs designed to increase the number of organ donors.
"With the elimination of patient based programs being felt across the kidney community right now, we are committed to ensuring that important patient programs continue,” said Carol LaFleur, Director of the Northeast Kidney Foundation. “The kidney wheels program is one way we can meet the needs of patients, families and community partners who reach out to us for support because it's a more localized model instead of a broader national model.”
