DENVER—DaVita was recognized by the Denver Business Journal this week as the healthiest employer in Denver with more than 1,000 employees in the Denver area.

“Any community as a whole is only as healthy as its individual citizens,” said Cynthia Baxter, vice president, Compensation and Benefits for DaVita. “Keeping our teammates healthy—and our community healthy and productive—is a high priority at DaVita.”

DaVita’s “Village Vitality” program allows teammates (employees) to earn “Vitality Points” for healthy activities such as quitting smoking. Earning Vitality Points reduces a teammate’s share of health coverage premiums. The program also offers the “We are Well” award, which provides free teammate insurance premiums for one year for those who have made significant strides in improving their health. In 2012, more than 40 teammates across the country received “We Are Well” awards.

This is the second year that the Denver Business Journal  (DBJ) held the Metro Denver’s Healthiest Employer awards, aimed at recognizing employers who put a strong focus on their workers’ wellness. Nominees were chosen after a two-part selection process that included a survey that scored each employer.

The DBJ partnered with Healthiest Employers LLC to complete the selection process and included considerations like biometric screenings, obesity coaching or management, health risk assessment and appraisal, and a tobacco-free workplace policy.
