MADISON, Wisc.—Medical Education Institute (MEI) announced that the new 5th Edition of the Core Curriculum for the Dialysis Technician is available to help dialysis technicians learn how to provide safe, quality care to dialysis patients. The book is available in electronic format and can be downloaded from MEIResearch.org. Printed books are available only from Amgen sales representatives or by calling 1-800-77AMGEN.
Technician training and certification resource
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) now requires all dialysis technicians to be certified. The Core Curriculum helps prepare technicians for certification and provides essential information about best practices in patient care.
"We are very excited about the release of the 5th edition of the Core Curriculum," notes MEI Executive Director, Dori Schatell, MS. "All of the cover art was done by dialysis patients who briefly share their stories about how important technicians have been to them. The new version is much easier to read, has a dramatically increased focus on preventing infection, and offers a revised Preceptor module for the first time since 1992."
The new edition addresses changes in equipment, regulations, reimbursement, and clinical practice since 2008, including:
- Reimbursement changes established under the "ESRD Bundle" in 2010
- Updated KDOQI Guidelines
- New water treatment standards established by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) in 2010
- New research from the Frequent Hemodialysis Network Study published in 2010
As with all previous versions, MEI administered and coordinated the process of writing, review, and production with advice and consultation from the American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA) and the National Association of Nephrology Technicians/Technologists (NANT). Funding for the Core Curriculum is provided by Amgen.
